The Town of Madison Police Department is looking for an EXPERIENCED police officer.  A hiring timeline is at the bottom of this page.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 21 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED or HSED
  • 60 college credits
  • No felony or domestic abuse convictions
  • 5 years law enforcement experience and currently certified or certifiable
  • Out-of-state applicants must be current police officers
  • Good driving record
  • Good physical condition (must be able to be certified by a medical professional to be able to complete the duties of a police officer)
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • Clear and concise speech
  • Must be able to work well with others and alone


  • Starting monthly salary is $4789.71 (2020)
  • Initial uniforms provided, $550 uniform allowance after 1st year
  • 11 paid holidays
  • 2 weeks vacation after the first year of employment
  • Physicians Plus and Dean Care medical insurance available (90% employer paid) (lump sum payout if you elect not to take the health insurance)
  • Longevity bonus
  • 1 day sick leave earned per month
  • WI retirement per WI state statute

You may be required to pass a written test, multiple oral interviews, psychological profile, medical examination, and drug screening.

General police functions, including but not limited to patrol, criminal law enforcement, traffic enforcement, maintaining public peace, protecting life and property, and working with the community to address community problems.

The Town of Madison has a border agreement with the city of Madison and city of Fitchburg.  The Town of Madison will be absorbed by these two communities no later than October 30, 2022.  A position with either city police department is not guaranteed and should not be expected for a new hire.  Due to this short timeline the Town of Madison is looking for an experienced police officer who can be trained quickly.  Recently retired officers are encouraged to apply.  Please click Intergovernmental_Agreement   to read the border agreement.
