Incident:  Automobile Crash EB US Hwy 12 / John Nolen Dr.

Incident Number: 2016-264355

Date of Incident:  October 10, 2016

Details of Incident:

On October 10, 2016, at approximately 4:56 pm, town of Madison Police was dispatched to EB US Hwy 12, at John Nolen Dr., for an automobile crash.  The investigation revealed a dump truck towing a trailer with a bobcat secured to it, was traveling at posted speed limits in the left lane of the highway.

Traffic in front of the dump truck came to a rapid stop and as the dump truck driver applied the brakes, the brakes locked up. The driver of the dump truck attempted to swerve to the right to avoid hitting a SUV in front of it, although was unsuccessful and ultimately hit the rear of the SUV.  The SUV was then pushed into a pick-up truck in front of it.  A total of three vehicles were involved in the incident.

The dump truck trailer and bobcat tipped over on its side as the driver attempted to swerve to the right, blocking the right lane and exit lane to John Nolen Dr.  A local towing company responded to turn the trailer and bobcat right side up.  In order to do so, all lanes of EB US Hwy 12 needed to be closed temporarily, which obviously affected rush hour traffic.  For the majority of the cleanup, at least one lane of traffic was open.

The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, the drivers injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

The driver of the dump truck was cited for failure to maintain control of a vehicle.

The town of Madison Police Department was assisted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Department Beltline Truck with traffic control.
