Details of Incident:

Officer Weaver and Officer Hoffman were on routine patrol following a white Mercury Sable.  Officers were able to see the driver was clearly not wearing a safety belt.  While following the vehicle a query of IL DOT records showed the plate should be on a white Chrysler.  The vehicle was eventually stopped and contact made with the driver.

After contacting the driver officers observed a number of cues to suspect other criminal activity was occurring.  A K9 was requested to respond while Officers Weaver and Hoffman completed paperwork.  K9 Maya from Monona PD arrived to assist and alerted to the vehicle for the odor of controlled substances.  Washington admitted marijuana was smoked in the car previously.

Officers searched the vehicle and located a 9 mm pistol in the trunk of the car.  The pistol had a fully loaded magazine but the chamber was empty.  The handgun was made safe and taken as evidence.  We are working with the Department of Treasury, Bureau of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to conduct a trace on this handgun.
